Believe it. I have cornrows and braids! The heat and humidity here does not agree with my long, curly white-girl hair, SO I decided to go to one of the many hairdressers here. With the help of my mom we explained what I wanted and now I am sporting a cornrow/hair style called two-step.
Caring for my hair with cornrows and braids is quite different than my typical routine.
I will leave the two-step style in for 3 weeks then probably do another cool weave pattern. Having braids is so much easier than worrying about my frizzy mess of a head that I think I might keep it braided for a while. It’s a serious drawback that my head is throbbing with pain right now, and especially when I laugh (which I do quite often) but it should go away soon. Whether it’s a good thing or not, I turn many more heads now that I have braids. Hopefully the requests to marry me don’t increase as well…
Cute! You should throw them all back in a pony tail! A giant thick pony tail of braids! I love it!
Great video. Use Apple Cider Vinegar to wash your hair. just spray it in the hair and you don’t have to wash it out, but it cleans the hair very well and it also makes your hair shiny. The smell is not so great but it will vanish after a little while. You can also dilute the vinegar. Most people who use it do. It is also great for the itching.
One way to keep your braids clean is to use cotton wool and methylated spirit to clean your scalp! Not sure about washing with braids in but i’ve never done it and dont know anyone who does! Great video and of cos great style!
Titi! Here’s another request to marry you! Marry me o! lol
You really are an inspiration my dear 🙂
Oh Cara you are such a special woman. I am a friend of your Moms and her comment on your unruley hair made me laugh. Your mother always had the best hair of anyone in our sorority and I’m sure your hair is just as beautiful. I am having a great time following you on this life changing journey. I hope to share a meal with you and your Mom next year. We’ll be wearing braids!
HI Kara,
I have worked with plenty of Black women over the years. I KNOW that they wash their hair with the rows in….I’m not sure how they do it….probably very carefully though. If you never wash it….it will get really dirty and itchy for you! Good luck figuring it out. Their hair is MUCH drier than ours.
Loving your posts and your journey! Warmly, Bonny ( Ross’s aunt!)
Bonny,
Hm, that is good to know. Everyone I’ve talked to here, all of whom are black, says do not wash your hair. I will do some research on the internet. So glad to know you are reading! Hope all is well at home.
i wouldnt use that hair grease if i was you. i’m black and dont use anything with petroleum jelly in it. when you get back to the states look up carol’s daughter.
You look adorable and I enjoyed watching the video. Please don’t leave the braids in too long because your hair will be seriously broken and damamged and it will then be very unruley and you’ll be very unhappy. Typically caucasian hair isn’t strong enough to handle cornrows and braids for long. Love you,
Mom
Thanks mom! I won’t leave them in for longer than 3 weeks. Don’t worry. I won’t let my hair get too unruly.
XOXO
You are so darn cute I can’t even stand it! I loved this post…the visuals and the sound…such a beautiful language. Proud of you beyond words, Cara.
Hugs,
Michele
Ahhh! thank you!! I think the video came out really well. I’m happy with it. It is such a beautiful language 🙂
Hugs!!
